Residents of Asylum Down in Accra had an unexpected occurrence after an average rainfall on Friday, February 28. Tonnes of garbage were seen floating in an open drain behind the Paloma Hotel
The tonnes of floating waste that were seen in a video comprises mainly plastic waste ( plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic bowls, diapers, etc.) in the runoff drain at Nima. It crosses the Ring Road into Assylum Down.
This happened only a day after the Ghana Meteorological Agency stated that people living in and around areas such as Nkrumah Circle, Weija as well as Graphic Road, should prepare to experience flash floods as the rains begin to pour down.
More flood occurrences and floating waste are expected.
The predictions of the GMA agency was based on anthropogenic activities as well as constructional buildings blocking watershed pathways. They also attributed the incoming flood to choked gutters and unclean surroundings.
